Pic St Loup Appellation - Home To Some Of The Finest Languedoc Wines

Located between the French Mediterranean coast and the Cévennes mountain ranges, Pic Saint Loup is home to some of the finest Languedoc wines. It is the northernmost, coolest and wettest of all the Languedoc terroirs. Only 30 kilometres from the sea, it benefits from the hot Mediterranean climate with a Continental influence induced by the Pic Saint Loup Jurassic mountain. It means a greater temperature variation between day & night compared to the plains of the region. This local climate combined with limestone soil (good for water retention) result in more aromatic fruit forward wines. The appellation covers exclusively red and rose wines from mainly Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. “The Pic, I suspect, will prove in the long run to be one of the most sought after zones of the Languedoc, producing perfumed, balanced wines of fresh constitution and poise as well as ample ‘garrigue’ character. They can outperform many Languedoc peers.”, Andrew Jefford, Decanter 2017. VIGNOBLES VELLAS Fourth generation of winemakers, Nicolas Vellas is the owner of 6 family wine estates in Languedoc, South of France, and is a very creative person. He knows how to select the best terroirs such as Pic Saint Loup, and oversees the entire wine making process in collaboration with the wine producers (grape variety selection, harvesting, fermentation, aging, blending). The name of the Cuvée “Grand Mechant Loup” is a word play on “loup” in 'Pic Saint Loup' which means “wolf” in French. So they created the “Big Bad Wolf” and the “Red Riding Hood” wines! It also refers to The Pic Saint Loup land of «garrigue» (Mediterranean herbs, lavander, rosemary, pines and olives trees) which gives the wines a 'wild' personality.
